Eating Disorders

Neurofeedback allows us to retrain the brain to develop patterns that lead to a healthy relationship with food. Eating disorders almost always go hand in hand with some other brain disorder. This is why eating disorders are very difficult to treat in traditional psychotherapy. Mood disorders, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are possible underlying causes of anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. Individuals whom struggle with eating disorders have a battle inside their mind.

It is as though there is an internal tug of war going on between opposing ideas. On one hand they want to eat and on the other hand, they don’t.

Usually one of the ideas will win and the individual will either eat too much or not at all. In order for a person to develop a healthy relationship with food, they need to have a healthy relationship with themselves first. The internal conflict within people suffering from eating disorders will only get worse until they develop an inner peace and self-acceptance of healthy individuals.

The mental fatigue of the ongoing battle inside the brain exhausts people and after this battle in the brain occurs, they fall back into their abnormal eating behavior. To quiet this internal conflict is the first key to overcoming any eating disorder.

A person has to learn to accept themselves and emotionally balance themselves in order to quiet the internal struggle going on.

Neurofeedback empowers an individual with ability to control their thinking since it allows brain activity to balance. Rather than ruminating on what food to eat or not to eat, an individual is able to be more decisive about what to eat or not. By stabilizing the electrochemical activity inside the brain, Neurofeedback allows individuals to reconnect their body and mind. Another positive benefit of Neurofeedback is heightened awareness which is critical to improve eating disorders.

Increasing the awareness of the appetite, a person can more accurately gage whether they are really hungry or eating for some other reason. When a person begins to figure out why they are eating, they can correct the issue and resolve the internal conflict they have about eating.

Neurofeedback is very helpful to those with eating disorders because it calms the central nervous system, increases bodily awareness and balances brain activity.
