Over the last few weeks our city has been on a roller coaster of emotion following the mass shooting at the Route 91 Country Music Festival on October 1, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV. If you weren’t there yourself, you know someone who was there or in close vicinity, you planned on going, but plans fell through, or you know someone who knows someone. If not, this tragedy was experienced as it was right in our own backyard. Somewhere you have been or picture yourself going as a resident of Las Vegas.
As a city we experienced shock, disorientation, and fear as the night and next morning unfolded. As a community we experienced a high point as we overcrowded blood banks, brought food and water to the first responders, and donated money and time on an individual basis and business with donating tattoo proceeds, free counseling, and t-shirt proceeds. Then, we experienced a low as memorial services began, worry for loved ones in the hospital still, and contact media attention from all media sources. Along with constant updates and changes on the investigation on the news.
Counseling is a way to express the emotions that you are feelings honestly and keep the stability to continue your everyday life. Receiving counseling is a positive way to unleash thoughts, dreams, and feelings without judgment. Whether choosing a long term counseling treatment plan or only receiving one or two counseling sessions can assist in coping with everyday life even if you haven’t experienced severe tragedy.
Coping skills can help with minor setbacks we deal with every day that can add to the stress of a problem we are dealing with in another aspect in our life. Counseling is a great tool to use in pinpointing the root of the problem you may be having. Not all problems are a result of Mental Illness, but counseling can help anyone, it can increase academic scores or be used to enhance performance in sports.
As the stigma on Mental Health begins to become more positive, counseling services are being covered by health insurance companies more often. You may want to reach out to your health insurance provider to see what they cover, you may be surprised at what they do.
